Iew Sohra is basically a farmer’s market to the regular tourist. But for the discerning tourist, the market It is a melting pot of cultural activity for people from remote village around the gorges of Cherrapunji.
Cherrapunji comes alive on Iewbah (major market day). From the early hours of the morning you can hear the bustle of packed buses and cabs with people from surrounding villages with their wares & produce.
People of Sohra especially those having regular shops and those who vend on market days are all primed for a busy action filled day. Schools function just half a day on Market days, for children to help their families either sale their ware at the market or buy to fresh produce for their homes.
At the market, vendors sell fruits, vegetables, raw honey, betel leaves & nuts, tobacco, spices, beaten rice, bread, local rice cakes- pu-sla, pu-saw, pu-khlein; fish, raw meat, clothes, shoes, farm tools, seeds, baskets and furniture.
